Detailing your BMW i3

The i3 is full of natural materials that reward careful cleaning, from the raw eucalyptus dash to the kenaf fibre door panels and the wool-blend seats. We keep sprays and dressings off those surfaces and use damp microfibre, soft brushes and fabric cleaner. The painted plastic body swirls like any other paint but needs a lighter touch with the polisher, and the coach doors make the back seat a two-door job every time.

What we watch for on a i3

• The eucalyptus dash is raw, open-pore wood and the kenaf door panels are natural fibre; both are cleaned with a barely damp cloth and never with a dressing or all-purpose spray
• The body panels are plastic over a carbon fibre tub, so the paint does not chip like metal but it does swirl, and the panels flex under a heavy polisher
• The rear coach doors only open with the fronts, so cleaning the rear seats means opening both doors and working from the front seat area
• Narrow tires and the tall body mean the lower doors collect road film and salt spray that runs down from the wheel arches
• REx cars have a small engine under the rear floor that we do not pressure wash; a wipe and a vacuum of the compartment is enough
