Fine machine polishing that restores depth and clarity to paint that has gone dull or hazy, without the heavy cutting of a full correction.
Polishing is the step that makes paint look wet. It uses a machine, a soft pad and a polish with very fine abrasives to refine the surface of the clear coat so that light reflects in one clean sheet instead of scattering off a million tiny marks. Auto Royale polishes cars in driveways and garages across the GTA with the same dual-action machines and lighting we use for full corrections.
People use the words polishing, buffing and paint correction as if they mean the same thing, and they do not. Polishing sits at the gentle end. It is the right choice when the paint is basically healthy but has lost its depth, when a new car's finish looks flat, or as the final refining pass after heavier work. If you need defined scratches removed, you want correction; if you want protection that lasts, you want a sealant or coating on top.
Under magnification, dull paint is covered in micro-marring: thousands of shallow marks from wash mitts, towels and dust. Each one scatters light. A finishing polish, worked with a foam pad on a dual-action polisher, levels those marks without removing meaningful clear coat. The result is sharper reflections, deeper colour on dark cars, and a brighter metallic flake on silvers and greys.
We work panel by panel in small sections, with a few slow passes per section, then wipe the residue and check under a light. Edges and body lines, where clear coat is thinnest, are taped or worked with a lighter touch.
Paint correction is the heavy version: compounds and cutting pads that remove swirls and scratches by taking off more material. Polishing is lighter, faster and safer on thin paint, and it is often the last stage of a correction once the cutting is done. Wax and sealant are the opposite kind of product. They add a layer on top of the paint and abrade nothing. A polished car with no protection loses its look within weeks, so we always finish with at least a sealant.
A car that gets hand washed and has never seen a drive-through brush is usually a polishing candidate rather than a correction candidate. So is a car that was corrected a year or two ago and has picked up light haze since. New cars often benefit too, because transport, dealer washing and lot time leave a flat, slightly cloudy finish that a single polishing pass clears up before a sealant or coating goes on.
If we find deeper defects during the inspection, we tell you before starting and explain the step up to a one-step correction, rather than over-polishing a car that needs more.
A polish on a car in decent shape takes two to four hours including the wash and decontamination beforehand, which matters because polishing over bonded grit drags it across the paint. We need shade or a garage and a dry day. The paint is protected with a sealant or wax before we leave, and you can drive right away.
Typical time: Two to four hours including the decontamination wash and protection; longer for large vehicles or soft paint that needs extra finishing.
