Gentle polishing for single-stage paint, chrome brought back, original interiors cleaned without harm. Low water, no pressure washing.
A classic car is not just an old car. It usually has single-stage paint with no clear coat, chrome that has been through sixty winters, rubber seals that crumble if you look at them wrong, and an interior that is worth more original than restored. Detailing it with the same process as a new Civic will damage it. Auto Royale details classics in your garage anywhere in the GTA, with low water, no pressure washing and products chosen for old materials.
Most classics in the GTA live indoors and come out a few dozen days between May and October, so the job is usually about dust, storage haze, gentle correction of oxidation and storage prep, not blasting salt out of wheel wells.
On single-stage paint, the colour and the protective layer are the same layer. Polish it and you remove a little of the actual colour, and the pad comes away red or blue or black. That is normal, but there is a finite amount of paint to work with, and a car polished hard for decades may have very little left over the primer, especially on edges and body lines.
So we start with the least aggressive step that works: a gentle cleaner wax or a fine polish on a soft pad, by hand or with a machine on low speed, working small sections and checking constantly. Oxidized, chalky paint usually responds beautifully to this and comes back deep and glossy. Lacquer finishes are softer and more solvent-sensitive than enamel, so we test every product on a hidden spot first.
Bumpers, grilles, trim spears and hubcaps are a mix of chrome plating, anodized aluminum and stainless steel, and each wants a different polish. Chrome gets a fine metal polish and a soft cloth; pitting is reduced in appearance but not removed, since it is corrosion under the plating. Anodized aluminum must not be polished aggressively or the anodizing comes off and the piece looks blotchy. Stainless takes more work and shines up hardest.
We tape or shield the paint around every trim piece before polishing metal, because metal polish on single-stage paint leaves a mark of its own.
Original vinyl, cloth, mohair, broadcloth and early leather do not take modern extraction well. Soaking sixty-year-old seat foam or horsehair padding invites mildew and shrinkage. We vacuum with soft brush heads, spot clean with mild cleaners on a towel rather than spraying the surface, and condition old leather with a product that feeds it without darkening. Vinyl is cleaned and protected with a non-greasy UV product.
Wood dashes, Bakelite knobs and painted metal dashboards are wiped with a barely damp cloth. If something is loose, cracked or brittle, we leave it alone and tell you about it.
A carburetor, points ignition, cloth-wrapped wiring and a generator do not want water. We clean classic engine bays dry: compressed air, soft brushes, a mild degreaser on a towel, and a detail brush for the fins and castings. For the exterior wash we use a low-flow rinse or a rinseless method rather than a pressure washer, so water is not forced past old seals into the trunk and footwells.
The most useful classic detail of the year is the one before the car goes away in November. A clean car stored under a breathable cover does not develop the spots, mildew and mouse interest that a dirty one does. We wash, decontaminate and wax the paint with a carnauba, clean and condition the interior, wipe down the engine bay, and condition the door seals so they do not stick to the paint over five months.
Typical time: About 3–5 hours for a full gentle detail; gentle paint correction on oxidized single-stage paint adds several hours.
