For owners who smoked in the car: what going smoke-free or selling really takes, what's realistic and what to do before we arrive.
You smoked in the car for years and now something has changed. You quit, a partner or a new baby is moving in, the lease is ending, or you want to list it as a non-smoker car and get what it is worth. Either way you are reading this because you can no longer tell how bad it smells, and you suspect everyone else can.
Auto Royale is a mobile detailer, so we handle this in your driveway, and we will give you a straight answer about what it takes. Our smoke smell removal page explains the ozone, enzyme and source-removal process. This page is about the decisions you face as the owner: whether to go fully smoke-free, what a buyer or lease inspector will notice, and how to set the car up so the work holds.
This matters more than any product. If the car is going smoke-free, we do a full source removal: headliner, vents, cabin filter, glass, every fabric surface, the ashtray and the seatbelt webbing, followed by ozone. The result holds as long as nobody lights up inside again. If you will keep smoking in it but want it less noticeable for passengers, a lighter plan makes more sense: an interior clean and ozone every month or two, windows cracked while you smoke, and no expectation that the smell is gone for good. We will quote either honestly; just tell us which one it is.
Anyone who opens the door makes the call in the first five seconds, before they look at the odometer. Dealers appraising a trade-in check the headliner above the driver's seat for yellowing, the ashtray and lighter area for residue, and the inside of the windshield for the tan film that tobacco leaves. Lease inspectors photograph burn marks on seats and door panels and charge for them separately from odour. Private buyers on Facebook Marketplace simply walk away or offer less.
A listing that says non-smoker gets more clicks and fewer lowball offers. Getting there is a full interior detail with source removal, plus repairing or disclosing burn marks; we are clear about which marks can be improved and which cannot.
Tobacco leaves tar and nicotine film that bonds to every surface and yellows plastics, which is why it takes the most work. Cannabis smoke is oilier and settles into fabric and the headliner but does not stain the same way; it responds well to enzyme cleaning and ozone. Vaping leaves a sweet, sticky glycerin film on the glass and dash that attracts dust and fogs the windshield from the inside. It is the easiest to remove, but it is also the one people assume is harmless until the windshield haze blinds them at night on the DVP.
Empty the ashtray and remove lighters, packs and any air fresheners you have been layering on top. Replace the cabin air filter or ask us to point out where it is, since a saturated filter reintroduces the smell every time the fan runs. Decide whether the car will be smoke-free from this point on, and text us the vehicle, how many years it was smoked in, cigarettes or cannabis, and any burn marks. We are open 24/7 and can run the ozone cycle overnight in your driveway.
Typical time: A smoke-free reset takes 3–5 hours including an ozone cycle; maintenance cleans for a car still being smoked in run 1.5–2 hours.
