A synthetic polymer layer that bonds to the paint and holds up through salt season, applied after a full decontamination at your door.
A paint sealant is a synthetic, polymer-based protection that bonds to your clear coat and cures into a slick, glassy layer. It does the same job as wax, keeping water, salt, UV and grime off the paint, but it is engineered rather than harvested, so it lasts months instead of weeks. For a car that commutes on the 401 through a Toronto winter, it is the most practical protection short of a ceramic coating.
Sealants are the middle of our protection range. Wax gives a warmer look and needs reapplying constantly; a ceramic coating lasts years but needs paint correction and a full day. A sealant sits between them: an afternoon's work, a sharp reflective shine, and six to twelve months of protection from a single application. Auto Royale applies sealants at your home or office anywhere in the GTA.
Wax is a soft layer that sits on the paint. A sealant cross-links as it cures, forming a thin, hard film that is chemically bonded to the clear coat. That is why it survives salt brine, repeated washing and summer sun far longer, and why it gives a more reflective, mirror-like look rather than a soft glow.
The bond also means a sealant is fussier about preparation. Wax will tolerate a slightly imperfect surface; a sealant will not bond properly to anything but clean, bare paint, and applying it over wax or old protection is wasted effort.
The car gets a full wash, then iron remover, tar remover and a clay pass so the paint is bare. If the finish is swirled, a one-step polish before the sealant is worth it, because sealant seals in defects just as a coating does, only for months rather than years. A panel wipe removes polishing oils, then the sealant goes on thin with an applicator, panel by panel, and is buffed off once it has flashed.
Where possible we apply in a garage or on a dry day with a clear forecast overnight so the sealant cures undisturbed. Glass, wheels and trim can be sealed with their own products in the same visit.
The ideal window is October to mid-November, after the summer bugs and sap have been decontaminated off and before the first brine truck. A sealant applied then keeps salt from bonding to the paint, makes winter washes faster, and protects the lower panels and rocker areas where the damage concentrates. A second application in April, after a spring decontamination, carries the car through summer UV and sap. Two sealant visits a year keep most daily drivers protected year-round.
Wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and avoid automatic washes with harsh pre-soaks, which strip sealant faster than anything. Rinse salt off when the temperature allows rather than leaving it for weeks. You can top the sealant with a spray sealant after washes to extend its life, or add a carnauba wax over it if you want the look of wax with the durability underneath. When water stops beading tightly, it is time for the next application.
Typical time: Two to four hours including the decontamination wash; add time for a polish, and allow the sealant to cure overnight before rain or washing.
