Yellowed, hazy polycarbonate lenses wet sanded, polished clear and sealed with a UV coating so the haze does not come back in a season.
Headlight lenses are polycarbonate plastic with a factory UV coating on the outside. After six to ten years of sun, salt and car washes that coating breaks down, the plastic underneath oxidizes, and the lens turns yellow and cloudy. The result is not only ugly: oxidized lenses cut the light reaching the road, which you feel on an unlit stretch of the 407 or a cottage road at night. Auto Royale restores headlights in your driveway anywhere in the GTA.
The quick fix sold everywhere, a toothpaste-style polish or a one-step kit, works for a few weeks and then the haze returns, because polishing removes the oxidation but leaves the plastic bare. A proper restoration removes the failed layer and then puts a new UV barrier on, which is the part that decides whether the lens stays clear for years or for months.
We mask the paint and trim around each lens with several layers of tape, then wet sand the lens through progressively finer grits, starting coarse enough to cut through the oxidized layer and finishing fine enough that the sanding marks are nearly invisible. The lens looks frosted at this stage, which is normal.
A machine compound and polish bring the plastic back to full clarity. Then the lens is wiped clean and sealed with a UV-blocking clear coat or a ceramic coating made for headlights, applied in a dust-free moment and allowed to cure. The sealing step is the one that lasts, and it is what most quick jobs skip.
UV does the main damage, so the lens on the side that faces the sun in your driveway often fails first. Winter accelerates it: salt brine and grit sandblast the front of the car on every highway drive, and the strong chemicals in some touchless washes attack the factory coating. Cars that live outside year-round typically start yellowing earlier than garaged ones.
Yellowing, haze, fine scratches and light pitting on the outside of the lens all respond to restoration. Problems on the inside do not: condensation or water inside the housing means a failed seal, and internal cloudiness cannot be reached without removing the lens. Cracks, deep rock-chip craters and lenses that have gone brittle and crazed are replacement cases. We check which you have before starting and tell you plainly.
With a UV sealant applied properly, a restored lens stays clear for a few years rather than a few months, and it can be restored again if it eventually hazes. Washing the lens with the car, keeping wax or sealant on it, and avoiding harsh wash chemicals all extend that. Restoration takes about an hour for the pair, and it pairs naturally with a pre-sale clean-up or a lease return, where cloudy lenses are an easy thing to get flagged for.
Typical time: About one to two hours for both headlights, including masking, sanding, polishing and the UV sealant cure.
