Detailing your Chevrolet Express

The Express has barely changed in decades and there are thousands of them working in the GTA, from plumbers' vans in Scarborough to church buses in Brampton. Most have never had more than a drive-through wash. What we watch for on a Express

• The engine cover between the front seats gets used as a tray and is stained with coffee and grease; a degreaser and a brush clean its seams
• Rubber cargo floors hold decades of grit and chemical spills; we scrub and rinse them and squeegee them dry
• Fifteen-passenger vans have a lot of cloth to extract and a lot of handholds to sanitize; shuttle operators book full interiors between contracts
• White single-stage paint oxidizes chalky on the roof and hood; compound and polish bring back the gloss and a sealant holds it
• Rear door hinges, the step bumper and the rocker panels rust and hold salt; we rinse them well and are honest about what is rust versus dirt

Minivans and vans see more spills, seat-belt buckles, snack crumbs and cargo than any other category. Sliding doors, seat tracks and cargo tie-downs all need attention.
