Fabric seats, headliners, door inserts and cargo upholstery cleaned with controlled moisture so stains lift without soaking the foam.
Upholstery is everything soft in the cabin that is not the floor: the seat fabric and the foam under it, the headliner, the fabric inserts in the door panels, the seat belts and the cargo area lining. Each one is cleaned differently, and the common mistake is treating them all like carpet. Auto Royale cleans seats and upholstery at your home or workplace anywhere in the GTA with moisture-controlled extraction, steam and fabric-specific chemistry.
The thing that makes seats different is the foam. Flood a seat with water and it wicks into the cushion, takes days to dry, and leaves a sour smell and a brown water-line stain as it does. So our process uses less liquid, more agitation and more suction than a carpet shampoo, and we treat the headliner with almost no liquid at all, because its backing is glued and saturating it is how headliners start to sag.
After a thorough vacuum of the seams, piping and the gap between the backrest and the cushion, we spot-test the cleaner on a hidden area of each colour of fabric to check for dye transfer. The seat is then misted with an upholstery cleaner, agitated with a soft brush to loosen body oils and soil from the weave, and extracted with the wand angled so that water is pulled across the surface rather than pushed into the foam.
Stains get individual attention before the general clean: tannin stains from coffee and tea, protein stains from milk and food, oily stains from sunscreen, makeup and takeout, and dye stains from denim or ink each need a different product, and using the wrong one can set the stain. Steam follows on the seams and headrests, where sweat and hair products build up.
Headliners are cleaned with a foaming cleaner applied to a microfibre towel, never sprayed directly, and blotted in one direction, which lifts dust, smoke film and finger marks without wetting the adhesive. Door panel fabric inserts and pillar trim get the same gentle treatment. Cargo areas and the backs of folding rear seats, which take hockey bags, groceries and dogs, are sturdier and get agitation and extraction like a seat surface.
Body oils, sweat, food and drink, mud, sunscreen and most makeup clean out well. Stains that have been heat-set by a summer of sun on a black seat, dye from new jeans on light grey cloth, and bleach spots from hand sanitizer or acne products are harder. Bleach damage removes colour and cannot be cleaned back; dye stains can often be lightened substantially. We tell you what to expect after the test spot rather than promising a perfect seat.
Because we keep the water out of the foam, seats are usually dry enough to sit on in two to four hours and fully dry within a day. A fabric protector applied to clean, dry seats makes future spills bead on the surface long enough to blot, which is worth it for family cars and rideshare vehicles. Upholstery cleaning on its own takes about one to two hours; combined with the carpets it becomes our interior detail.
Typical time: About one to two hours for all seats, headliner and cargo upholstery, with seats dry enough to use within a few hours.
