Detailing your Mercedes-Benz GLS

A GLS is a seven-seat luxury bus, and the Richmond Hill families who drive them use every seat. We fold the second row to get at the third, lift the child seats, extract the carpets and clean the beige Nappa with foam and a brush. What we watch for on a GLS

• The third row is a real adult seat and gets used, so crumbs, juice and shoe marks go all the way to the back; we work from the tailgate with the second row folded
• Maybach two-tone paint and the chrome-heavy grille need taping and soft brushes; the colour break is hand-finished and must not be polished across
• Beige Nappa in a seven-seat family car shows everything, from denim dye to chocolate, and a foaming cleaner with a soft brush is the only way to do it properly
• Running boards and the tall doors collect salt crust along the bottom; we clean the boards, the jambs and the rubber seals every visit
• The roof is tall and long, and brush washes rarely reach it; we wash and polish it by hand from a step
