Detailing your Mercedes-Benz CLA

The CLA is the affordable Mercedes, which means it works hard: commuting, rideshare shifts and a lot of underground parking. The frameless doors and low roof trap grime in the seals and in the rear seat corners, so we take the interior apart with brushes and a crevice tool. Thin, soft paint on the early cars comes back with a careful polish, and a sealant makes the next few months of salt and slush easier to rinse off.

What we watch for on a CLA

• Frameless door glass leaves a dirt line along the top seal; we clean the seal channel so the glass stops streaking after rain
• The low roof and small rear windows make the back seat dark and cramped, so crumbs and salt hide at the base of the rear bench
• Beige Artico shows denim transfer on the driver bolster within a season; a synthetic leather cleaner removes most of it
• First-generation cars have soft, thin paint that swirls badly, and the hood and roof are often etched by bird droppings that were left too long
• AMG versions have larger brakes and wheels with heavy dust, and the front splitter scrapes on garage ramps

Luxury cars: soft paint, delicate trim

Premium interiors use more leather, open-pore wood and gloss trim, and premium paint is often softer. We use gentler chemistry, soft microfibre and slower machine passes so nothing is marred.
