Low-pressure degreasing, rinsing, drying and a satin dressing, with the alternator, fuse box and connectors covered before water goes in.
A clean engine bay makes leaks obvious, keeps grime and salt off connectors and hoses, and makes a used car far easier to sell, because the first thing a careful buyer does is pop the hood. Auto Royale cleans engine bays in your driveway or office lot anywhere in the GTA, using low pressure, water-based degreasers and a method built around not getting water where it should not go.
The fear people have about washing an engine is reasonable. A pressure washer aimed at a fuse box or an alternator can cause real trouble. The answer is not to avoid cleaning the bay; it is to cover the sensitive parts, use controlled water and steam, and dry everything properly before starting the car. Done that way, it is a routine job that takes under an hour on most vehicles.
We only work on a cool engine, so if you have just come off the Gardiner we start on the interior or the wheels first. The battery is disconnected where the vehicle allows it, and the alternator, fuse box, air intake, exposed electrical connectors and any aftermarket electronics are covered with plastic and tape.
A water-based degreaser is sprayed on the plastics, hoses and painted metal and agitated with soft brushes to lift the oily dust. We rinse with a gentle spray or steam, never a high-pressure jet, then blow the bay dry with compressed air to clear water from crevices and around connectors. Covers come off, the engine is started to warm and dry fully, and a water-based dressing goes on the plastics and rubber for a satin, factory look that does not attract dust.
No pressure washer at close range, no spraying directly into the alternator, intake or ignition coils, no solvent-based degreasers on rubber belts and hoses, and no silicone dressings that leave the bay shiny, slippery and dusty within a week. On vehicles with a distributor cap or exposed wiring, older cars especially, we use steam and brushes rather than rinsing. On electric vehicles we do not wash the high-voltage compartment at all; the front compartment of an EV gets a dry wipe-down and dressing only.
Winter is the main culprit. Salt brine finds its way through the grille and settles on everything at the front of the bay, leaving a white crust that corrodes aluminum and connectors over time. Spring pollen and summer construction dust add a layer, and a small oil or coolant weep spreads the grime into a sticky film. Mice are the other GTA problem: a bay cleaned and inspected each fall gives you a chance to spot nests before a rodent chews wiring over winter.
Before selling or trading in a car, so the bay looks cared for in photos and inspections. After buying a used car, so you can see where fluids are coming from. Before a mechanic visit, which some shops appreciate because it makes diagnosis cleaner. And once a year for any car that lives through Ontario winters, usually combined with the spring exterior detail.
Typical time: Thirty to sixty minutes on most vehicles, longer for heavy grease build-up or older engines that need steam and hand work.
