Bird droppings lifted safely from paint, glass and trim, with etched spots polished where possible.
Bird droppings are acidic, and in sun they bake onto clear coat quickly. Parked under a tree in Mississauga or beside a lake-front condo in Etobicoke, a car can pick up several overnight.
The danger is not the mess but the etching that forms when the dropping dries and then gets wiped away dry. We lift it the way paint wants to be treated: soaked, softened and floated off.
Fresh ones are a two-minute job. Week-old ones baked in July sun are a different story, and the sooner you act, the more of the finish you keep.
A dried dropping often contains seeds, grit and bits of shell. A dry paper towel drags those across the clear coat and leaves fine scratches around the stain.
Softening comes first. We lay a wet microfibre over the spot with a dedicated pre-wash or a little rinseless wash, let it dwell, and then lift straight up rather than rubbing.
A trick that helps in a pinch: soak a clean cloth in water, drape it over the dropping for several minutes at the curb, and lift it off. Do not rub, and do not use a dry tissue from the glovebox.
After a dropping is gone, a dull ring or a faint crater sometimes remains. That is the clear coat itself eaten by the acid, not a leftover stain, and it needs levelling rather than cleaning.
Light etching usually polishes out with a fine machine polish and a bit of care. Deeper etching that has reached the colour coat may only improve, not disappear, and we will say so before we start.
The shape tells the story. A round, matte spot with a slightly raised edge is an etch; a dark spot that vanishes under a wet cloth is just residue. We check by wetting the area and looking from several angles under a light.
Droppings on windshields leave a smear and a film that wipers push around. We clean glass with a dedicated cleaner and, when needed, a light glass polish for stubborn spots.
On plastic trim and fabric convertible tops, droppings can stain porous surfaces; we treat these with gentle cleaners rather than aggressive solvents.
Mirrors, door handles and roof racks collect droppings that people forget about. We check all of them during a normal wash, because acid sitting on a chrome or black trim edge still leaves a mark.
A sealant or ceramic coating does not make paint bird-proof, but it gives you a sacrificial layer. Droppings sit on the coating and wash off more easily, buying you time before they touch the clear coat.
If you park under a tree or near a ledge you cannot avoid, a rinseless wash once a week and a quick spot clean when you notice one help more than any product.
Winter helps and summer does not: cold weather slows etching, while July and August heat on dark paint can mark clear coat within a day.
Typical time: 30–60 minutes for spot removal; longer if polishing etched areas is needed.
