Mineral spots from sprinklers, garage drips and hard water dissolved off paint and glass; etched spots polished out and re-protected.
A water drop is never just water. Sprinkler spray on a condo visitor lot, the drips from a concrete ceiling in an underground garage, a thunderstorm followed by hot sun on the driveway: when the drop evaporates it leaves behind everything that was dissolved in it, and that chalky ring of minerals is a water spot. Leave it long enough on a dark car in July and it starts to eat into the clear coat. Auto Royale removes water spots from paint, glass and coated cars wherever yours is parked in the GTA.
There are two kinds of water spot and they are not the same job. The first sits on top of the paint as a mineral deposit and dissolves with the right chemistry. The second has etched a shallow crater into the clear coat and only polishing removes it. Knowing which you have before anyone touches the car is what keeps the job quick and the paint safe.
Toronto's tap water is moderately hard, and lawn sprinklers and hose washing left to air-dry are the everyday cause. Underground parking adds a nastier one: water dripping through concrete picks up lime and leaves white, alkaline deposits that bond harder than ordinary spotting and stain dark paint quickly. Rain itself is clean, but it washes the dust on your car into drops that dry in the sun, and automatic car washes with a failing spot-free rinse leave the whole car covered in tiny rings.
After a proper wash, surface deposits are treated with a dedicated water spot remover, a mild acidic solution that dissolves the calcium and magnesium in the ring. We apply it to a cool panel, let it work for a short time, agitate with a soft microfibre and rinse thoroughly, panel by panel, never letting it dry. Most fresh and moderate spotting disappears at this stage, including on glass, where the same product works and a glass polish finishes any haze.
If a ring is still visible under light after the deposit is gone, the minerals have etched the clear coat and the spot is now a tiny depression in the surface. We level it with a dual-action polisher and a fine compound, then a finishing polish, working the affected panel evenly. Deep etching on a car that sat under a sprinkler all summer can need more aggressive correction, and we assess the clear coat depth first. Spots that have gone through the clear coat are rare but do happen on neglected dark cars, and those are paint work.
A ceramic coating resists water spots but does not refuse them; a coated car parked under a sprinkler will spot, and the deposit then sits on the coating instead of the paint. The advantage is that it comes off more easily with the remover and the coating underneath is unharmed, as long as the spots are not left for months. Glass is prone to the same etching and shows it as a hazy, pitted band under the wipers.
Acidic removers strip wax and sealant, so every panel we treat gets a fresh layer of protection afterward; on a coated car we top the coating with a compatible booster. Prevention is simple: dry the car after washing instead of letting it air-dry, move it out of range of sprinklers and garage drips when you can, and rinse off rain spots before the sun bakes them in. The spotting we see most often:
Typical time: About 45–90 minutes for surface deposits on a whole car; etched spots that need polishing add 1–3 hours depending on how many panels are affected.
