Detailing your Toyota Prius

Older Prius models make up a big share of Toronto's taxi fleet, so a lot of the ones we clean have a driver's seat worn through on the bolster and a back seat that has carried thousands of strangers. We treat those like a commercial job: steam on the touch points, extraction on the rear bench, ozone if the cabin has absorbed years of air fresheners. The newer sleek Prius and Prius Prime are usually private commuter cars that need little more than a maintenance wash and a sealant.

What we watch for on a Prius

• Older Prius models are common Toronto taxis, so a worn driver's bolster, a heavily used rear bench and years of air-freshener smell are typical
• The hybrid battery sits under or behind the rear seat with cooling vents in the cabin; we keep those vents clear and never flood that area
• Plastic aero wheel covers pop off, and the alloy wheels behind them are usually black with brake dust
• The current car's steeply raked rear glass and small wiper leave a film of road grime that needs a glass polish
• Light grey cloth on earlier cars shows every stain and responds well to hot-water extraction

Compact cars: small cabins, big wear

Small cabins mean every surface is within reach of a stray coffee or a boot print, and the carpets take it all. Outside, compact cars live a hard life in parking lots and on the 401, so the lower panels collect salt and stone chips.
