Iron remover, tar remover and clay pull bonded brake dust, rail dust, sap and overspray out of the paint so it feels like glass again.
Run your hand over a freshly washed hood inside a thin plastic sandwich bag. If it feels gritty, that is bonded contamination: tiny iron particles from brake dust and rail transport, tar, tree sap, industrial fallout and overspray that have embedded themselves in the clear coat and will not wash off. Clay bar treatment is how we get it out. Auto Royale does chemical and clay decontamination at your home or office anywhere in the GTA.
Decontamination is not cosmetic fussiness. Iron particles sitting in the paint keep oxidizing and can leave rust-coloured pinpricks on white and silver cars. Contamination also stops wax, sealant and coatings from bonding, and polishing over it drags grit through the finish. Every one of our protection and correction services starts with this step, and it is available on its own for cars that just need the paint to feel smooth again.
We start with chemistry because it removes contamination without touching the paint. An iron remover is sprayed on the clean, cool paint and left to dwell; it reacts with iron particles and bleeds purple as it dissolves them, which looks alarming on a white car and is exactly what should happen. A dedicated tar and sap remover follows for the black specks along the rockers and the sticky spots under trees.
Whatever remains is handled mechanically. A clay bar or clay mitt is glided over the paint with plenty of lubricant, and the clay shears off bonded particles as it passes. You can hear and feel the difference as a panel goes from grabby to silent and slick. We fold the clay often to keep a clean face, and if a piece is dropped it goes in the bin rather than back on the paint.
Brake dust is universal, but some drivers get more than their share: cars parked near GO or freight rail lines collect rail dust, cars that sit downtown near condo construction collect concrete dust and paint overspray, and anything that commutes behind trucks on the 401 or the QEW collects tar and asphalt in summer. Cars delivered by rail to dealerships often arrive already contaminated, which is why new cars are not exempt.
A traditional clay bar is more thorough and reaches contours; a clay mitt or towel is faster and gentler on large flat panels. We choose based on how much is left after the chemical step. Any clay can leave faint marring on soft or dark paint, which is why decontamination on its own is finished with a sealant and, on a car being polished or coated, is simply the first step before the machine comes out.
For most daily drivers, once or twice a year is right: in spring after salt season and in fall before it. A car that gets regular sealant top-ups and hand washes stays smooth longer. Once the paint is clean and bare it needs protection in the same visit, so a standalone clay treatment always ends with at least a spray sealant. If you are planning a polish, sealant or ceramic coating, this step is built into that service rather than booked separately.
Typical time: About one to two hours on top of a wash, depending on how heavy the contamination is and the size of the vehicle.
