Detailing your Chevrolet Volt

Volt owners tend to be the type who charge every night and keep a car for a decade, which is why so many are still on the road in Markham and Mississauga. The interiors are a bit unusual, with four separate seats around a battery tunnel and, in the first generation, a glossy white console that marks if you look at it wrong. We clean it all gently, extract the carpets and seats, and clear the dust film from the sloping hatch glass. Paint gets a polish and a sealant.

What we watch for on a Volt

• The glossy white centre stack on first-generation cars shows every fingerprint and scratches easily; we clean it with a plastic-safe cleaner and a soft microfibre
• Rear seats sit either side of the battery tunnel and the tunnel's cupholders and the gap around them are where crumbs end up
• The low hatch glass and the rear parcel cover trap dust and the inside of the glass films over; we clean it with the cover removed
• Pebble Beige leather and cloth stain easily; a gentle cleaner on the leather and an extraction on the cloth bring the colour back
• The charge-port door on the front fender gathers salt and grit; we clean and dry the recess so it does not stick in winter

Small cabins mean every surface is within reach of a stray coffee or a boot print, and the carpets take it all. Outside, compact cars live a hard life in parking lots and on the 401, so the lower panels collect salt and stone chips.
