Detailing your Fiat 500

The Fiat 500 is a tiny car with a painted dashboard and, on the 500c, a fabric roof that slides back, both of which need gentle care. We polish fine marks out of the dash panel by hand, clean the roof fabric with a soft brush and protect it, and tilt the front seats to get the crevice tool into the back. Abarth wheels get an iron remover for the brake dust, and older cars get their roof clear coat polished.

What we watch for on a 500

• The painted dash panel on gas cars is finished like exterior paint and scratches from rings; a plush microfibre and a hand polish for fine marks
• The 500c fabric roof slides over a fixed frame and its seams collect pollen and grime; a fabric cleaner, a soft brush and a water repellent handle it
• Abarth brakes and the wide tires produce heavy dust and sand on the small wheels; an iron remover before brushing keeps them clean
• The rear seat is reached by tilting the fronts, so crumbs and salt collect in the tracks and at the base of the bench
• Older cars have tired clear coat on the roof and hazy headlights that a correction and a restoration fix

Compact cars: small cabins, big wear

Small cabins mean every surface is within reach of a stray coffee or a boot print, and the carpets take it all. Outside, compact cars live a hard life in parking lots and on the 401, so the lower panels collect salt and stone chips.
