The McLaren GT is the one built for long drives, with a glass hatch over a rear deck that sits above the engine and gets warm, so the lining under it is cleaned gently and the glass is treated like paint. Cars with the cashmere trim get a dry brush and nothing wet, the carbon sills get a soft cloth and the side intakes get brushed clear of the bugs a road trip leaves behind. The paint gets a light correction and a coating.

What we watch for on a GT

• The rear deck under the glass hatch sits above the engine and gets warm, so leather or fabric lining is cleaned gently and the glass is washed like paint
• Optional cashmere-blend trim is brushed dry and spot cleaned with minimal moisture, never sprayed
• Getting in and out of the GT over its dihedral-door sills leaves shoe scuffs on the carbon; we wipe the sills with a soft microfibre and never let a polish or abrasive near the weave
• The car rides slightly higher than other McLarens but the splitter still scrapes on steep ramps; we inspect it before polishing
• The side intakes collect leaves and bugs on long drives; we clean them with a soft brush and foam
