Detailing your Ford Focus

Plenty of Focus hatchbacks and sedans are still running around Scarborough and Mississauga, often on their second or third owner. The interiors tend to be tired rather than filthy: a glossy steering wheel, dusty vents, a faded dash and carpets that have soaked up a few winters of salt. What we watch for on a Focus

• The third-generation dual-clutch cars are often older and higher-mileage now, so interiors show wear: shiny steering wheels, grimy shifter boots and sun-faded dash tops that respond well to a matte-finish dressing
• Light grey headliner picks up handprints and smoke stains; we clean it with a foaming cleaner and no pressure so the backing does not separate
• RS and ST wheels sit close to big brakes and cake with dust; Nitrous Blue and Tangerine Scream paint shows swirls under sun, so we finish with a fine polish
• Rear hatch glass is steeply raked and collects road film and wiper streaks on the inside from the defroster vents
• The Focus Electric has a large battery hump in the cargo floor that traps grit along its edges

Compact cars: small cabins, big wear

Small cabins mean every surface is within reach of a stray coffee or a boot print, and the carpets take it all. Outside, compact cars live a hard life in parking lots and on the 401, so the lower panels collect salt and stone chips.
