The Element was built for wet dogs and muddy boots, with a urethane floor you can mop and seats that shrug off water, so the ones still on the road have usually lived hard. We wash the floor rather than vacuuming it, brush the hair out of the seat fabric, and open the clamshell doors to clean the long jambs. The grey composite body panels go chalky with age, and bringing their colour back is the single biggest visual improvement on an older Element.

What we watch for on a Element

• The urethane floor is meant to be mopped, not vacuumed only; we wash it with a mild cleaner and dry it fully
• Water-resistant seat fabric still holds dog hair in its weave and needs a rubber brush before cleaning
• The unpainted grey composite cladding chalks with age and responds well to a trim restorer
• Rear-hinged clamshell doors expose long jamb surfaces that collect dirt every time they open
• Many Elements are well past ten years old and have paint oxidation that we assess before polishing
