Musty smell, fuzzy seat belts or green mats after a wet season: HEPA vacuuming, steam, antimicrobial cleaning, extraction and forced drying.
Mould in a car needs three things: moisture, a food source and time. Toronto winters supply the moisture (snow melting off boots into the carpet), the car supplies the food (fabric, dust, crumbs), and a few weeks parked in a humid garage or a hot August driveway supplies the time. The result is a musty smell first, then white or grey fuzz on seat belts, seats and the floor. Auto Royale remediates mould and mildew on car interiors at your home or office anywhere in the GTA.
What separates a real remediation from a wipe-down is dealing with the water. Spraying a growth with a cleaner makes it disappear for a week; removing the spores, drying the materials fully and identifying where the water came in is what keeps it gone. We do all three and tell you plainly if the car has a leak that needs a mechanic or a body shop.
In almost every case we trace it to one of a handful of causes.
We work from least to most invasive. First, a HEPA vacuum removes loose spores and growth from every surface without blowing them into the air; a standard vacuum does the opposite. Then we treat affected fabric, carpet, seat belts and plastics with an antimicrobial cleaner and let it dwell, followed by high-temperature steam, which kills growth in seams and crevices the cleaner cannot reach.
Carpet and seats get hot-water extraction to flush out the dead growth, the cleaner and the moisture that fed it. If the carpet padding is wet, we lift the carpet and dry the padding and the floor pan directly. The cabin air filter is checked and we will recommend replacing it, because a mouldy filter re-seeds the cabin every time the fan runs. Finally we run air movers and, when needed, an ozone cycle for the lingering musty odour.
A remediated car that goes back into a damp underground garage still wet will grow again. We dry the interior with air movers before we leave, and we ask you to leave windows cracked or park the car in the sun for the rest of the day if the weather allows. In winter we run the heater on fresh air, not recirculate, to carry moisture out.
Mould spores aggravate asthma and allergies, and a musty car on a daily commute is a daily exposure, which is reason enough to deal with it promptly. Light surface mildew on seats and belts cleans up well. Growth that has spread through seat foam, or a car that sat with standing water, may need the affected foam or carpet replaced, and we will say so rather than sell you a cleaning that cannot last. Flood-damaged vehicles with growth inside the dash and wiring are outside what any interior cleaning can fix.
Typical time: Usually 3–5 hours for a full remediation including drying, longer if carpet has to be lifted; the odour cycle adds airing-out time.
