Detailing your Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The G-Class is a brick with a lot of edges, and every edge collects something: grit in the hinges, salt behind the spare tire cover, dust along the door seams. We clean all of it with brushes and foam, which takes longer than the size suggests. Matte factory paints get a matte-safe wash and sealant with no polishing, while gloss cars get a light correction, and the running boards on G 63s are scrubbed and dressed.

What we watch for on a G-Class

• Factory matte paints such as designo and manufaktur magno finishes cannot be polished or waxed; we use a matte-specific wash and sealant and remove bird droppings immediately
• Exposed door hinges, push-button door handles and the flat body seams collect dirt; a detailing brush and foam clean them without scratching the paint
• The spare tire cover and the rear door hinge area hold grit and water; we clean behind the cover where the salt builds up
• Running boards on G 63 cars get stepped on in salty boots and the rubber strips go white; we clean and dress them
• The flat, upright glass is easy to clean but the interior gets dusty because of the boxy cabin; a thorough interior vacuum and wipe takes longer than the size suggests
