Detailing your Subaru WRX

A WRX gets driven in every season and usually driven hard, so it arrives with leaves in the hood scoop, salt on the cladding and brake dust welded to the wheels. We clear the scoop first, check under the hood for aftermarket intakes before any water, and restore the black plastic that the newest generation wears around every wheel arch. The Recaro and suede-like seats get a dry brush. A sealant or coating makes the rally-style grime rinse off between visits.

What we watch for on a WRX

• The hood scoop collects leaves, pine needles and snow that fall onto the intercooler; we clear it before washing
• Current cars have enormous black cladding around the arches and bumpers that fades and needs a trim restorer
• Recaro and Ultrasuede seats are dry-brushed and spot-cleaned rather than soaked
• Aftermarket intakes and intercoolers are common on WRXs, so we look under the hood before any water goes near it
• The big rear wing on STI and upper trims collects grime on its underside
