Detailing your Ford Escape

There are so many Escapes in the GTA that we probably detail one every week, from a 2010 with cloudy headlights to a new plug-in hybrid. The common thread is family use: car seats, strollers and hockey bags in the back, coffee up front. We pull the mats, extract the carpets and seats, steam the vents and clean the hidden seat tracks. On the outside we wash, decontaminate and seal the paint, and on older ones we restore the headlights so the whole car looks younger.

What we watch for on a Escape

• The rear seat on 2020 and newer models slides fore and aft, and the track channels fill with crumbs and salt — we vacuum them with the seat in both positions
• Second and third generation cars often have cloudy headlights by now; a headlight restoration is one of the most noticeable improvements on an older Escape
• Rotary shifter dial and the glossy trim around it scratch easily, so we clean them with a soft microfibre and no abrasive brush
• Rear wheel wells and the lower hatch collect salt spray because the back of the car runs in its own dust cloud; we rinse the hatch seams and underside of the spoiler
• Hybrid and PHEV models have a slightly raised cargo floor with a lip that catches grit from strollers and hockey bags

Compact SUVs: cargo areas that do everything

Compact crossovers are family cars, gear haulers and dog taxis in one. The cargo floor, the rear seatbacks and the door sills collect the most dirt, while taller bodies catch more road spray along the sides.
