Detailing your smart fortwo

The smart fortwo is the smallest car we detail, and it still takes longer than people expect because the fabric dash on older cars, the plastic body panels and the painted safety cell each want a different approach. We brush the dash rather than spray it, polish the panels and the cell with light pressure and clean the cabrio roof fabric with a soft brush. Older cars get a headlight restoration and a trim restorer for the faded panels.

What we watch for on a fortwo

• The fabric-covered dash on 2008–2015 cars is vacuumed with a brush and spot cleaned, never sprayed with all-purpose cleaner
• The body panels are thermoplastic and the tridion cell is painted metal, so we polish the cell and the panels with light pressure and no heat
• The cabrio's fabric roof slides back over fixed rails and its seams collect pollen; a fabric cleaner, a soft brush and a water repellent handle it
• Older cars have hazy headlights and faded black plastic panels on base trims; a headlight restoration and a trim restorer help
• The cabin is tiny and the seats sit close to the sills, so boot scuffs and salt at the seat base are the usual issues

Compact cars: small cabins, big wear

Small cabins mean every surface is within reach of a stray coffee or a boot print, and the carpets take it all. Outside, compact cars live a hard life in parking lots and on the 401, so the lower panels collect salt and stone chips.
