Flex owners keep their cars because nothing else quite replaced it, so most of the ones we detail have years of road trips and school runs in them. The long, flat body is easy to work on but the grooved doors and two-tone roof need a careful hand with polish. What we watch for on a Flex

• The horizontal grooves pressed into the doors trap wax and polish residue, so we work them with a soft brush before buffing to avoid white lines
• A two-tone roof usually means a painted contrast panel that gets ignored at car washes; we polish it and treat the roof seam gutters where moss and grime build up
• Refrigerated second-row console, where fitted, develops odour from spilled drinks and condensation; we clean it out and dry it with the lid open
• Multi-panel Vista Roof has three separate glass panels and shades, which means a lot of glass and tracks to clean inside
• Long low body with a huge flat hood and roof collects tree sap and bird droppings that etch into dark colours like Tuxedo Black
