Soot, ash and residual smoke smell cleaned from interiors after a nearby fire, with clear limits on what we can fix.
Cars parked in a garage fire, a neighbour's fire or a smouldering engine incident often come out with a grey film on every surface and a smell that fills the cabin. The structure may be fine; the interior is not pleasant.
We clean soot, ash and smoke residue from the interior. We do not repair fire damage, and we will say so up front if the car needs a body shop or an insurance assessment first.
Most of our calls here are for light to moderate exposure: cars that sat nearby, not cars that burned. That is where interior cleaning makes a real difference.
Soot clings to surfaces and smears if you wipe it dry. We start with careful vacuuming using a HEPA vacuum and soft brushes so we lift loose ash instead of grinding it in.
Then we work through the cabin with an alkaline cleaner on plastics, vinyl and glass, and steam on seams, vents and door jambs. Headliners and fabric seats are cleaned gently, since pushing hard can set a dark stain.
Glass gets special attention. Soot film on the inside of the windshield creates glare at night and is a safety issue on the 401, so we clean it with a dedicated glass cleaner and clean microfibre until it is clear.
Smoke odour gets into foam, headliner fabric and the ventilation system. We target the source by cleaning the surfaces first, then use ozone treatment with the vehicle sealed and unoccupied, followed by airing out.
We can greatly reduce the smell, but we will not promise it disappears. Heavy smoke exposure often leaves some trace, especially in porous materials.
If wiring is melted, plastics are warped, or the headliner has heat damage, that is beyond cleaning. The same goes for water used to put the fire out, which may need a drying plan first; see our water-damaged interior page.
We will not decide whether the car is safe to drive after a fire. If an insurer or mechanic has not looked at it, get that done first.
Exterior soot and heat haze on paint are separate questions. Light soot lifts with a foam wash and clay; blistered or discoloured paint needs a body shop.
Photograph the car before any cleaning in case you need documentation for a claim. Replacing the cabin air filter is a cheap step that makes a noticeable difference, and it is worth doing after the interior is cleaned.
We can usually come to a driveway or a clean lot nearby, and we bring our own water and power.
If your car sat in a parking garage during a building fire, the sprinklers and fire crews may also have soaked it. Tell us when you text, because wet carpets change the plan and the order we work in.
Typical time: 3–5 hours depending on soot level and odour treatment.
