Sonics were a cheap, honest commuter car and most of the ones we detail in Scarborough and Brampton are still doing that job on their second owner. The interiors are mostly plastic and black cloth, so our work is about extraction, dusting the odd gauge pod and restoring plastics that have gone grey. Yellowed headlights are almost universal by now and a restoration changes the whole face of the car. A polish and sealant on the paint finish it.

What we watch for on a Sonic

• The gauge pod and the deep dash recess around it collect dust that a cloth cannot reach; a soft brush and vacuum do the job
• Black cloth seats hide dirt until they are extracted, and the water tells the story; we always shampoo them properly
• Hatchback cargo floor has a lip and a parcel-shelf cord that gathers grit; we lift the floor and vacuum the spare well
• Most Sonics are now older and the headlights have yellowed; restoration makes a noticeable improvement
• Black bumper inserts and lower door plastic fade grey and come back with a trim restorer

Compact cars: small cabins, big wear

Small cabins mean every surface is within reach of a stray coffee or a boot print, and the carpets take it all. Outside, compact cars live a hard life in parking lots and on the 401, so the lower panels collect salt and stone chips.
