The Tiguan is Canada's best-selling Volkswagen and in the GTA it is a family car first, with a third row full of cracker crumbs and a cargo well that catches everything that falls out of it. What we watch for on a Tiguan

• The optional third row on 2018–2024 cars is for kids and collects crumbs that fall into the cargo well; we fold the second row to reach it
• Panoramic sunroof drains clog with maple keys and pine needles; we clear the channels during an exterior detail
• Storm Grey cloth and leatherette show salt rings and juice stains; the cloth gets an extraction, the V-Tex a mild cleaner
• First-generation cars often have chalky clear coat on the roof and yellowed headlights that a correction and restoration fix
• The wide, flat hood and the grille slats collect bugs on summer highway drives; we remove them before polishing so the pad does not drag them

Compact crossovers are family cars, gear haulers and dog taxis in one. The cargo floor, the rear seatbacks and the door sills collect the most dirt, while taller bodies catch more road spray along the sides.
