Swirls, wash marring, light key marks and paint-transfer scuffs polished out of the clear coat — with an honest call on what is too deep.
Most scratches on a car are not in the paint. They are in the clear coat, the transparent top layer that is thinner than a sheet of printer paper, and that layer is what we work with. A swirl from an automatic car wash, a scuff from a shopping cart in a Costco lot, a light key mark, a brush scratch from clearing snow: if it has not gone through the clear, it can usually be polished down until it disappears. Auto Royale assesses and corrects light scratches wherever your car is parked in the GTA.
The honest part of this service is the assessment. Polishing removes a scratch by levelling the clear coat around it, which means removing a little material, and there is only so much to remove. We tell you at the start which marks will disappear, which will soften, and which need a body shop, so you are not paying for hours of polishing on a scratch that needed paint.
Run a fingernail across the scratch. If it glides over, the mark is shallow and in the clear coat; polishing will almost certainly remove it. If the nail catches lightly, the scratch is deep in the clear and may still be improved, possibly with careful wet sanding first, but there is a chance of a faint trace remaining. If the nail drops in and you can see a white, grey or silver line, it has gone through to primer or metal; no polishing fixes that, and the right answer is touch-up paint or a body shop.
We back the test with a paint depth gauge on the panel, which tells us how much clear coat is there to work with. A car that has been polished before, or a factory panel with thin paint, changes what is safe to attempt.
The work is done with a dual-action polisher, a compound to cut the scratch down and a finer polish to restore gloss. Swirls and wash marring across a panel are corrected in passes over the whole panel so the finish is uniform. An isolated scratch is worked locally with a small polisher and, when it is deep enough to justify it, wet-sanded with very fine paper first, then compounded and polished out. Paint transfer from another car's bumper or a painted post usually looks worse than it is: the other paint sits on top of yours and comes off with a solvent and a light polish.
Every corrected area is wiped with a panel prep to check the result under proper light and then protected with a sealant, because polishing exposes fresh clear coat.
The sources are predictable.
A scratch through to primer, a deep key gouge along a whole door, a cracked bumper or a rock chip is paint or body work. For those we can clean and prep the area, and point you to touch-up paint for chips so rust does not start. Scratch removal is spot work; if the whole car is swirled, hazy or dull, that is paint correction, which is a full-day process covered on its own page.
Typical time: Usually 1–3 hours for a few spots or a couple of panels; a whole-car swirl problem becomes a paint correction booking.
