Detailing your Ford C-Max

C-Max owners tend to keep their cars a long time, so the ones we detail usually have a decade of commuting worn into the seats and the carpets. The upright, glassy cabin is easy to work in but it shows haze on the inside of the windscreen and dust in every vent. We extract the cloth, steam the vents and plastics, and get the glass properly clear. Outside, a wash, decontamination and sealant keep the tall hatch looking fresh through another salt season.

What we watch for on a C-Max

• The Energi cargo floor sits high on a battery hump with a step at the seatbacks that collects dog hair and gravel; a stiff brush and the vacuum crevice tool get it out
• Large windscreen and side glass mean a lot of interior glass film from off-gassing plastics; we clean glass twice, once with a cleaner and once with a dry microfibre
• Many owners are now long-term, so seats show years of compression and the light-coloured cloth needs hot-water extraction to come back
• Door sills are wide and painted, so they scuff from shoes — a light polish on the sills makes the car feel newer
• Tall body catches a lot of road spray; the rear hatch and back bumper are usually the dirtiest panels

Compact cars: small cabins, big wear

Small cabins mean every surface is within reach of a stray coffee or a boot print, and the carpets take it all. Outside, compact cars live a hard life in parking lots and on the 401, so the lower panels collect salt and stone chips.
