Tesla, Ioniq, Mach-E, Polestar and more: glass roofs, vegan leather, screens, charge port and camera care, no engine bay needed.
An electric car is mostly a normal car to detail, with a handful of exceptions that matter. There is no engine bay but there is a frunk. There is a charge port that should not have water sprayed into it. There is a glass roof the size of a dining table, a screen that runs the whole car, and seats that are not leather no matter what the brochure implies. Auto Royale details Teslas, Ioniqs, Mach-Es, Polestars, Bolts and every other EV at your driveway or condo garage across the GTA.
Most EV-specific care is about knowing what to avoid: oily conditioners on vegan leather, ammonia on tinted glass roofs, pressure on sensors, and washing a car that is still charging.
Before we touch the exterior we ask you to unplug the car and close the charge port door, and we never spray water directly at the port; a dirty port gets a damp towel and then a dry one. The cable gets wiped down too, because it drags across the driveway every night and brings grit back into its cubby, and we keep water away from a wall-mounted home charger.
Sentry mode and the built-in car wash mode on Teslas are worth setting before we start: car wash mode closes the windows, locks the charge port, folds the mirrors and disables the wipers, and turning Sentry off stops the car filming and alarming at us for four hours.
A panoramic glass roof shows water spots and fingerprints from underneath as well as above, so it is cleaned inside and out with a tint-safe, ammonia-free glass cleaner and dried with a waffle-weave towel. Many EVs have a factory tint or a coating on that glass that ammonia will haze. The outer surface gets sealed with the paint so rain beads off and does not leave mineral rings.
The centre screen is the car's only interface, so it gets a screen-safe cleaner on a lint-free cloth, never sprayed directly, with the screen locked or in cleaning mode so a wipe does not open the trunk.
Tesla and most EV makers use a coated synthetic upholstery, not leather. It is durable but it does not absorb conditioner, so a leather conditioner just sits on top, attracts dust and leaves the seats slippery. We clean it with a pH-neutral interior cleaner and a soft brush, wipe it dry, and apply a matte UV protectant that bonds without greasiness. Pet nails and jeans rivets leave marks that we can reduce but not erase.
White and light interiors pick up denim dye transfer on the bolsters and door armrests. Caught early, it cleans off with a dedicated cleaner and a soft brush. Left for months, the dye migrates into the coating and becomes a permanent blue shadow, so a quarterly clean on a white interior is worth it.
The frunk is a storage bin, not an engine bay, and it collects road grit and groceries. We vacuum it, wipe the liner and the seal, and clean the drain channels so water does not pool. Around the car, the driver-assist cameras, the ultrasonic sensors in the bumpers and the radar cover behind the badge are cleaned by hand with a microfibre, never with a pressure washer at close range, because a misted or scratched lens throws warnings.
Aero wheel covers trap brake dust and grime behind them. Where they pop off easily we remove them, clean the wheel and the cover separately, and reinstall. Regenerative braking means EVs produce less brake dust than a gas car, but the iron that does land on the paint still needs a decon, and a sealant or coating afterwards makes a heavy, grime-flinging car far easier to keep clean.
Typical time: A full inside-and-out on an EV runs about 3–5 hours; an interior or exterior alone is 1.5–3 hours.
