Fine paint mist from construction, road painting or home projects lifted from paint, glass and trim.
Overspray is airborne paint that drifted onto your car, giving the surface a rough, speckled feel, often in white, yellow or grey. In the GTA it usually comes from condo facade work, road line crews, a neighbour's fence staining or a shop spraying with the door open.
The sooner it is dealt with, the better. Fresh latex comes off easily, while cured enamel bonds to clear coat and needs a careful, stepped approach.
Fixing it is about identifying what the overspray is and picking the least aggressive method that removes it. Rushing to scrub is how clear coat gets damaged.
We start by feeling the paint through a thin plastic bag, which exaggerates texture, and by identifying the paint type if you know it: water-based latex, oil-based enamel, or road marking paint. This decides which method is safe.
We then test a small hidden area before moving to the rest of the car.
Colour tells part of the story. White or grey speckles on a dark car usually point to construction, while yellow dots near the lower doors suggest road line paint kicked up by traffic on the 401 or a municipal street.
First a thorough wash and iron decontamination to clear loose grit. Then a clay bar with plenty of lubricant, which lifts light overspray from clear coat without abrasion.
If clay is not enough, we move to a solvent or dedicated overspray remover on cured paint, always tested first. Stubborn spots may need a light polish afterward to restore gloss.
Each step is only used if the previous one did not do the job. Starting with the gentlest option protects the clear coat and keeps the finish uniform across the panel.
Glass handles overspray well with a razor blade used flat and wet, and with glass polish. Rubber seals and textured plastic are more delicate; paint sits in the grain, so we use soft brushes and gentle solvents rather than force.
Wheels and lower panels often take the heaviest dose, especially after road line painting, so we pay extra attention there.
Chrome and painted mouldings are checked last, since they trap paint in their edges.
If overspray has bonded into soft or oxidized paint, or if the clear coat is already thin, aggressive removal is not worth the risk. We will say when the best answer is partial removal or a body shop.
Take photos and note the date and location. If a contractor or property manager caused it, they or their insurer may cover the work, and we can provide an itemized invoice for your claim.
Waiting makes it harder. Paint cures with sun exposure, so a car parked outside through a hot weekend is more difficult than one cleaned within a day or two.
Typical time: 2–5 hours depending on paint type, area covered and how long it has cured.
